How to Submit Stories for Publication (August 23)

A short story can result in a career-building publication and attract attention of agents. Many well-regarded literary journals open in September. I will share best practices for: finding the right journals for your work, determining work readiness, writing cover letter and bio, honing your submission strategy, as well as etiquette and the mindset.

Very Short (Flash) Workshop (September 27)

Bring a <1,000 word story (fiction or nonfiction) for real-time reader and instructor feedback. You will walk away with 12 copies of your piece, marked up with what moved your audience and areas to revise, as well as honed editorial skills. Fun, fast, and supportive. 12 writers max.

Novel Opening Workshop (Fall/Winter 2026)


This is a rare opportunity to get workshop feedback on the first 50 pages of your novel, meet writers in similar stages, and form a supportive community. 12 writers max.

Reading and Writing a Short Story (in session)

We will read The Best American Short Stories 2025 together and write a draft (or a few!) of your own.

Each meeting, we will discuss the reading to develop our sense of what a short story can do, review a craft element of writing a contemporary short story, and write in community. 

Outside of class, you will read 2 stories per week from The Best American Short Stories 2025 anthology, edited by Celeste Ng, and work on your story draft, as desired.
